Disturbing rattling mechanical noise

The noise relates to a 1992 900 16V with 132,000 miles in otherwise excellent operating condition. This particular noise is intermittent and seems to reappear when the throttle is advanced and is most pronounced when the engine is at operating temperature. At first glance I suspected the power steering pump was failing but after isolating the pump by removing the belt the grinding/rattling noise was still present. After removing one belt after another to isolate idler pulley,a/c compressor, alternator, and finally the water pump[which was replaced 30000 miles ago]The noise is still present.
This morning after the car sat all night ie. stone cold, I started the engine for a moment and there was a slight cam chain noise with a less pronounced but similar noise emminating from around the crank pulley. At this point I am suspicious of the cam chain tensioner. The noise appeared yesterday so I am hopeful that if in fact the tensioner is failing the chain and related components havn't been damaged.
the SAAB[Bentley} manual say's that the tensioner can be replaced without removing the engine. Any idea's would greatly appreciated. Thanks John K
