Sounds like you're at the end. It might not go 50 feet before failing catastrophically or could go hundreds of miles. With what you describe as an "advanced" stage of pinion bearing failure, I personally wouldn't move it. Either get a rebuilt (e.g. Erickssons) or get your transmission rebuilt locally. You can save lots of $$$ if you remove the transmission yourself. Either pull the engine/transmission or drop the transmission out the bottom.
As for the money, if you get a mile for every 15 cents of repair work you put into the car, you come out ahead. So if the transmission work sets you back $1000, you need to get about 7000 miles out of the car after the repair.
