In my opinion, if changing the fluid causes the transmission to die, it has been living on borrowed time for a while already.
Burned/oxidized transmission fluid does not work well. I agree--changing the fluid might cure some problems or keep problems from happening.
I've changed the automatic transmission fluid in many Saabs with 100,000+ miles to AMSOIL synthetic ATF and never had a problem (related to the change).
