Fuel pump woes

Hello-
I have an 87 Saab 900 with 131,000 miles, no rebuilds. I had a somewhat frozen fuel pump which my mechanic unfroze by replacing temporarily the fuel pump relay with a wire running from, as he put it, "12:00 to 6:00", connecting two of the sockets normally plugged by the relay. The car started, he replaced the relay, and I ran the car for a month afterwards with no problem. Then it happened again. The engine would turn over briefly and die. Following his instructions on my own, I repeated the procedure, and the car started and ran fine. But when I replaced the wire with the relay, the engine wouldn't start again. Is the relay bad? (How could a relay go bad?). Does the mileage indicate the fuel pump should go to fuel pump heaven? Thank you for any hints short of replacing the pump, which I'll have done, if necessary. Thanks.
