Hey Lowell-
Believe me! I can relate to your fuel pump blues! As a matter of fact I just finished installing a new fuel pump in my 92 900 this evening and it also had 132,000 miles on the clock. It appears that the replaced pump was the original judging by the accumulation of dust around the tank cavity, but I can't say for sure since I am not the original owner.
My car was running perfectly and I was on my way to fuel up after the low fuel light began to illuminate. I stopped for a moment and shut the engine off. When I tried to re-start,the engine would stall, acting of fuel starvation. After adding 5-6 gallons of fuel not even a start and stall. I ended up having the car towed to my house.
To make a long story short; If you are mechanically inclined there a lot of people who can help you. I had to make a few tools to remove the ring which holds the pump in the tank but otherwise it is fairly straight forward.I think your 87 900 has a roller style pump which I have heard is a little more durable than the rotor style which I have. A word of caution though..spend some time cleaning around tank opening before you remove the pump to minimize dirt from entering the tank and be extremely careful not to generate any sparks!!!!
