Would it really take that long? You can install an engine in that amount of time, including running the wires. I spliced wires in on our 85 900t but it was more than just to the alternator. It seemed like only a few in the bundle were really rotted out. I don't recall exactly which ones or how many since it has been several years. I removed the plastic sheath and inspected each one. Get him to use wire with teflon insulation so you won't have to worry again. When soldering wires, regular insulation shrinks up and melts if you accidently hit it with the iron. Teflon is very heat resistant and will actually allow you to hit it with the hot tip of the iron without melting. IT will stand up to engine heat.
