Just got some (4) used SPG wheels for my 87 Turbo... Replacing the 15 spoke wheels I currently have. As it turns out the replacement 3 spoke SPG wheels needed some work first...

3 out of 4 were in Good to Very Good Shape and the 4th was in Fair to Good shape. Most of the damage however was just curb rash with the 4th wheel having curb rash all the way around it on the inner lip.

Here is what we did:

Got out the file set (I have all types of flat files, some large, some small, some coarse, some fine) and started filing around the inner lip to smooth out the curb rash using different files when needed... Also sanded with different grades of sandpaper to smooth out the edges... It is incredible how good (really incredible) the wheel lips looked after this process... Took me about 4 hours to do all 4 wheels.

Then took some Brake dust cleaner, a water hose, and cleaning rag and cleaned the wheels completely - front and back to remove all brake dust, grime and dirt. Determined during the cleaning process that some of the previous paint had peeled off so I have decided to strip the fronts of the wheels of all previous paint, sand and paint...

So far thats where we are. Havent determined yet what to use to strip the wheels. Once stipped though we will sand, prime (1 to 2 coats), sand some more, spray silver type wheel paint (Wirth wheel paint will do, but I think I am going to use the Engine Enamel Aluminum colored paint from AutoZone which seems to be a pretty close match) - 2 to 3 coats, then 2 to 3 coats of a lacquer clear coat. We will do the same for the center caps so as to have a good match with the wheels.

I have read that it is good idea to bake the wheels in an electric oven at about 100 to 150 degrees to really harden the paint... Dont know if the wifey will go for this but...

So thats where we are. Will post more later as we finish up. Hindsight says I should have taken some 'before' pics to compare to the 'after' pics... Hmmmm maybe next time.

Vroom... Vroom...
