Hi Todd. I designed the website for 1979-1993 Saab 900 which is what I think you read. A 4-speed from a 1978 99 *will* fit in your car with minor modifications. I know this because I have a '78 99 4-speed in my '84 900T. The '78 4-speed uses the same engine-to-transmission bolt pattern as the '79-'93 900, the only difference is in the front cover which incorporates the front motor mount. You must swap a 900 front chain-drive cover to make it fit the 900 - very easy to do its a direct swap. If you look at the photograph above from the "manual transmission issues" section you will see the 1978 99 4-speed I used during the conversion - the 900-style cover in the foreground.

For reference, 1978 was a transition year for the 99 - first year for the chain-drive transmission - prior to 1978, the final drive was gear-driven. SO, transmissions prior to 1978 will not fit the 900 but the 1978 fits fine.
