I tore mine apart and ordered a rebuild kit. They sent me one for a '97 instead of a '87. I was only $30-40 from airpartsonline.com. I lost interest in the job since I have the compressor removed and a fuel pressure gage sender installed at that end of the fuel rail. I really only used the a/c about 1 week out of the summer anyway. I would say the main problem in the compressor is a leaky seal on the main shaft. The outer casing gasket looks very durable so I doubt it ever leaks. You ever see inside a compressor? It's really strange. IT has 4 or five small pistons simliar to a car engine that are run up and down when the pulley rotates. It was a major pain to get the clutch off, etc. I had to fabricate a piece of metal and use bolts to hold it. airpartsonline also sells rebuilds if you loose your momentum.
good luck,
dave n
