I am a virgin to the internal robustness of these motors. Seeing so many folks posting about 300K & 400K 2.0L still chugging, perhaps has lulled me to sleep. Yes I understand ring seal, valve seal, etc, and was under the perception that these portions of this motor are bulletproof. As I said, at 5K the boost needle was about straight up in the yellow, and I was rather underwhelmed with the accel. I did notice a vacuum line completely off just behind the AMM right on top the casting. As I said I am a turbo virgin so wasn't sure what to expect. GM Turbo Buicks I have driven in the past planted you butt right thru the seat, and this was nothing like that.
Re. the gear oil, I think the Bentley & factory recommends the 75-90 GL as an option. It smelled like gear oil, and was very clean on the dipstick. I have read on this BB that this lube makes the shifting somewhat "notchey" and I didnot really notice a big difference from my 90 with 10W30 in it.
Re. the coolant, I presume you can not look into the radiator for condition due to the configuration w/o caps on the tanks. I only saw the level in the fenderwell tank looked OK and was underpressure when the car was warmed up. Any other way to quick check the coolant? I forgot to mention that the guy trying to sell this car just put a new waterpump & thermostat in the car, as he said it was leaking profusely around the pump shaft when he first started it up.
Yes I doubt anyone else has called this guy, since the high miles probably scared most others off. However, my fear was the trans is about to implode but so far only the reverse gear pop-out has reared its head. I am trying to meet the dude to test drive it in 5th at 70ish so I can listen for the death whine of the tranny.
The price has already dropped from $1200 to now $800 after I educated him.
He just wants the thing gone as it was his girlfriends EX's car.
I do not plan to part this thing out, and if I can't drive it, I wont buy it. Any more wisdom, pls. advise.
