Sounds like the transmission on the '87 has a failed pinion bearing and probably some other damage too.
At least on the 16v engine, the transmission can be dropped out the bottom though you may want to pull the engine anyway.
Given that the '87 transmission must be removed, pull it, then get it disassembled and see what's needed to rebuild it. If you decide to go with the the box from the '83, you might consider rebuilding (at least new pinion bearing) before installing it. If the transmission is good, it will probably only cost a few hundred dollars and could save lots of $#%&@@! later. You may have some issues with complete interchangability between the '83 and '87 to be checked carefully (return spring on shift linkage, geometry of front motor mount, etc.) if I recall some posts that I read here some time ago. GregD or Chrisx may have some good info on that issue.
