I wouldn't jump in to a rebuild just yet. First make sure it still rolls with the clutch in[to eliminate the possibility of a stuck parking brake etc. and then pull the side cover with the dipstick on it. Pull the little arm that moves the reverse gear around[it is the only bolt in that area-10 mm head], make sure that the gear that the arm attaches to is slid toward the front of the car. flop down the little brass slider that the arm attaches to. Now get someone to wiggle the shifter from side to side. What you should see moving in the trans is a little tab that drops down of the shift rod[the same rod that is attached to the shifter] Now your'e in the neighborhood. look at that area and what you should see is a groove that is formed by the various shift forks[look at the brass pieces] and that little tab on the shift rod is in the only fork who's groove is out of line with the rest. If there is more than one fork out of line pry whichever fork is out of line so it ends up back in line. see if it will work now. What I am trying to see if if the linkage has somehow gotten messed up and the trans is shifted into more than one gear at the same time.
The 83 trans will work if it has the same dipstick arrangement for the oil fill[ie the fill and the dipstick are one and the same]. you will have to change the shifter because they are different or you will have to use the front housing and shifter rod from the 87 trans which is what I would do.
