For the first time appeal the cop will not be there. Just some joe schmo representing all of the cops for the day. He will read the ticket to you and that is all of the information he has. This is your best and usually only time to get the ticket thrown out. If the judge gives you a reduction, take it. From my experience it's your best bet. You can appeal again, but this time the real cop does have to show up and the chance of getting it thrown out are slim to none.
Don't even try to get it reduced to a non-moving violation. Mass. does not do that. You either get a reduced speeding ticket or it gets thrown out. Mass. does not mess around with speeders. I know that now!
If you appeal, most likely you will get it reduced. If you get your crap together and prove how there is no way the cop got you, then you have a better chance of getting it thrown out.
Whatever you do don't tell them how fast you were going! Always say, I don't know, I was going with traffic and not paying attention. You're not lying and it won't prove you were speeding. It's the only thing you can say.
I've been nailed in similar situations. It's funny, a lot of people appealed and were there the same day as me. All of us got reductions.
Good luck!
