Tire Dealer - B/S Artist or Expert?

Got one of my front tires, Pirelli P400, replaced due to encounter with a pothole which caused a bubble in the sidewall. Told the tire dealer (a local guy) I wanted the lug nuts hand tightend to 90 ft lb since I was tired of not being able to loosen them when tightened with an air wrench. He tells me that they use an air wrench with a "stick" which prevents over tightening. "Sticks" look like a regular socket extension to me. He said they use certain diameter ones for certain cars, and the vibration prevents the air gun from overtightening. Sounds crazy to me - anybody ever heard of such a thing???
