Thanks for the advice on covering my butt. It will probably be kinda hard to find a witness who can attest to the window not being broken. The only person I can think of who sees my car regularly is my wife, and she'd have a biased interest. However, the fact that the mechanic paid for the replacement of the windshield in the first place seems like it would imply guilt in the matter...
As for insurance, I live in California and it is very high here. Especially in L.A. County where I live. I only have the legally-mandated liability insurance, not full coverage, so any repairs come out of my own pocket.
I have left a message for the mechanic, who conveniently is out of the country for two weeks (went back home to Iran again...). I will wait for him to respond as I'm sure he's picking up his messages, but if I have to run with the current windshield for two weeks, it can be very dangerous due to the poor visibility.
Thanks again, jdfromla... Hey, does that mean you're "J.D" from L.A.? Or are you from Louisiana (LA)?
