Almost the same thing happened to me, I thought for sure it was the clutch or slave cylinder but it turned out to be the hydraulic clutch line that runs from the clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinder. I have not worked on an 84 but on my 85 and 87 the clutch master cylinder is under the brake servo unit (round thing on the driver side firewall in the engine compartment that the brake fluid reservoir is connected to. The line then runs down the drivers side of the engine towards the front of the engine where the clutch and slave cylinder are. You should see where the line connects to the slave cylinder because just above it will be the bleed nipple. If this is your problem it is a fairly easy fix but if it is the slave cylinder it is a little more complicated. I haven't personally replaced a clutch yet but have been studying on how to do it because my 85 900T has a clutch that is starting to slip a little. As Bill mentioned the Townsend import site is an excellent resource for DIY projects. I have included the link to this site. I hope this helps.
