pump and rack with the threaded fittings. Previously, it had been leaking from one of the hose connections. If I remember correctly, it was the hose running from the rack to the reservoir (return hose) which had started to bloat. The end clamped (extremely tightly) to the rack was swollen and soggy.
New hoses/clamps/fittings contained the leaks. Both my rack and pump are 2-year-old rebuilt(rack)/used(pump) units with ~20k miles on them.
When you finally get underneath your car, try unclamping the rubber bellows from the steering rack to the tie rod. If it is full of fluid, then you have your answer- bad seals in the rack.
By the way- I like the new name. "'roo" was distinctive, but "Mr. Science" sounds like the cross between a children's TV show host and a super-villian. I picture Christopher Lloyd in a lab coat with an Einstein wig.
"Hey, Mr. Science! did you trade in your DeLorian for a SAAB???"
tune in next week for the exciting conclusion...
