You don't *have* to pull the engine, but you might as well. The passenger side is no big deal, but the driver's side is buried under the intake manifold and is next to impossible to get to without pulling the engine. I'm sure someone with a lot of time and small hands could do it, but I'd also bet that in the hands of a professional it might honestly be faster just to pull the engine. Still, pulling the engine is not a $1000 job - it's ten hours in & out at best, so unless you're paying $100/hr for labor, it would be a ripoff. Pulling an engine in a c900 should be a matter of three or four hours. If *I* can do it in three, someone with the right equipment should be able to do it even faster. Pull back the wiring harness, disconnect the oil & coolant lines from their radiators, undo the motor mounts, undo the speedo cable & shifter rod, disconnect the drive axles, and pull it out. Not rocket science.
If it does come down to pulling the motor, use the opportunity to replace other things, like alternator bushings, crank seals, etc.
