I have a 1990 900 Non Turbo 3dr with a Manual 5 speed. Since I have owned it (1 year) I have never needed to have it in reverse to take the key out and I did not need to pull up on the collar button to get it into reverse. Several months ago it began to get difficult to get into fifth gear, I could still do it but it needed some not to gentle coaxing or double clutching. It also started popping out of reverse but I never had any problem getting it into reverse. Then about 2 weeks ago I felt something in the housing of the shift lever snap while I was shifting. There was not very much resistance and it felt probably like a plastic part giving way. Immediately the only symptom was that I could now spin the shift lever around 360 degrees. I could feel an indent that held it in the proper alignment when it was positioned so that the shifting pattern guide on top of the knob was correctly aligned, but it would spin freely if you just twisted the knob. The car was still shifting just as it had before and this really posed no problem. Then while highway driving I shifted from 1st to 4th through the gears but had the usual trouble getting into 5th. After I stopped the car and tried to start moving again I realized that I could not get the car into 1st, 2nd, 5th or reverse gear. The shift lever felt quite loose side to side but I could only get the car into 3rd and 4th.
The garage, which has gnerally done good work for me says they have checked the bushing and linkage and they seemed okay and have advised me to get a rebuilt transmission. Does this really sound correct? I generally truist these specific mechanics but I know they are not Saab specialists. As I have read on Saab bulletin board the other symptoms I experienced seem to always indicate some kind of linkage trouble, yet they could find none.
