that it's pretty easy to snap that plastic neck on the cable at the speedo end. Mine was snapped & I almost replaced the cable because of it, but decided it wasn't really necessary. Instead I aligned the cable to as close to a direct 90 deg. entry into the speedo housing, top & bottom & made up a little clip/bracket that secures the cable to the adjacent crossbrace.
Who knows, like you suggest - maybe that's what wacks out these speedos eventually. Common sense at least would tell you that a dog legged cable going into the speedo isn't going to make life any easier on the components.
