Being able to start with car in reverse and foot off clutch

Reading a note about moving into reverse while car is rolling rekindled my curiosity about what Saab was thinking about when they did not include a fail-safe switch on the clutch. I mean, Saab prides itself on its safety innovations (no security glass on side windows so rescue people can break them!), etc. So what gives by being able to start the car in reverse without depressing the clutch! Both my 1987 and 1996 permit this. What is the reason - anybody??
