.... disengage the clutch, engage the brake, and start the car. Should you fail to do so, in my mind the jerk of the car is an appropriate reminder that you screwed up.... as opposed to a frivelous sensor that eventually will break and cripple the normal function of the vehicle.
With all due respect, I don't really think it's a safety issue. As Ari suggests, such a sensor would really just protect against driver incompetence. Should there also be a sensor that locks out forward gears when a brick wall is in front of the car? Certain competencies must be assumed by a manufacturer. The day I learned to drive, my dad taught me that while key's in ignition, clutch should be disengaged unless you're planning to move. Do that by depressing pedal and optionally shifting to neutral.
I once borrowed my friend's Camaro for a hot date (didn't have the SAAB yet). Came out from dinner, got in the car, and couldn't get it to start for about 5 minutes. I was thoroughly embarassed... I then realized that even though I had shifted the car to neutral, it wouldn't start with the clutch engaged. Pushed in the clutch and it started right up. Needless overdesign as far as I'm concerned.
Ari makes a good point about the health of the starter. Be nice to your SAAB! (or else..... evil Swedish voodoo.... ask me how I know :-)
