Mysterious Motor Trouble

Hello all, I need some advice. My '91 900 S automatic has a mysterious motor problem. I was driving along and suddenly the tachometer started flipping up and down, then the motor cut out and wouldn't start again. Plenty of electrical power, seemed like some kind of fuel delivery thing. So I brought it to a shop, they found and replaced a blown vacuum line, pretty cheap. On the way home the motor cut out once, I shifted to neutral and she started right up again and drove me home. Next morning I drove to work with no problems. Then I went to drive home and she would not start. So I called a tow truck. When I went to push the car to the street it started right up. Frustrating to say the least.
A few days earlier, a valet guy left it in gear with the parking brake on, and the motor cut out. It started right back up and seemed okay. Also, I put a different kind of gas in it before this stuff happened. I bought the car used a year ago and it has been very reliable, no problems, but the engine light goes on now and then. The mechanic who checked it out when I bought it said he traced it to the oxygen sensor but I have not had it replaced.
The mechanic is now saying I need a new computer, because there is an error message but no source for the error or something like that. He quoted me about $650 with labor, but said there is no guarantee it is really the problem.
I trust these guys, they are highly recommended, but I need other opinions. I can pay the cash if it will work, obviously I want to fix it for good and not have any more troubles. I commute back and forth across the Bay Bridge (SF to Oakland), a very bad spot to break down.
Thanks for your thoughts, Matt
