It seems very odd that only one valve is bent. The engine would have gone through many full rotations while you were trying to start it. If the cam timing was off, I would think that all of the exhaust valves would impact their pistons. Did the engine stop dead, or did you just give up cranking?
I'm by no means an expert, but the cams are in time when the slot in the cam for the distributor is vertical relative to the block, the cams on the number one cylinder are pointing away from the valves (valves mostly closed), the marker on the chain sprocket is pointing to the marker on the cam support, and the engine is at 0 degrees TDC with pistons 1 and 4 at the top of the cylinders.
You might want to rotate the engine through two complete revolutions by hand (very tedious) to check for any resistance before you use the starter.
