ignition switch wiring-nuetral safety switch

I just dropped a replacement 8v engine and 5-spd tranny into my daughter's 88 900 base car that came with AT. Engine and gearbox ran great in rusty donor car, but now... no response from starter. I have no juice at the starter solenoid connection (fuel pump runs), but carefully transferred all wires from old to new starter switch (actually I cut the old ones off on the 87) as well as all starter connections. My question is, is it neccessary to attach the two wires that normally go to the "nuetral safety switch" on the automatic? Mark Jeter's conversion directions say "no", but I am wondering if that is my real problem. Anyone else gone through this? I would just hate to try it and hear something go "poof"!
Thanks
jim
