In days of eld, I'd totally agree with formulavee65. The capacitor in a point-type distribtor is absolutely required to keep the points from pitting. But these here SAAB 900s ain't got no points in the distributors! (to twist the English language a bit).
All of my cars from my '54 Studebaker up to my '78 Datsun B-210 had point distributors. (They were a royal PITA to properly tune, especially on the V-8s with the distributor waaay in back between the cylinder banks. And the Studie had a dual-point distributor. Setting the dwell on those puppies was an interesting experience.) They needed the capacitor in the distributpr to save the points. But with the 900, SAAB uses an electronic ignition - no points.
It's noise suppression of some sort. I am curious about the sparking that Val is experiencing with the capacitor.
