I performed my conversion strictly following the information at the Townsend Imports website, and the current legal requirements. I replaced the receiver/dryer, expansion valve and all hoses were replaced with the new barrier type hoses. I learned so much about AC systems while doing the conversion I decided to take the test and become lisenced. I can now purchase R-12 over the counter no problems. You may want to consider this option, if you are still unsatisfied with your conversion. I flushed the system with mineral spirits. Since I was replacing the hoses and other parts, all I had to do was flush the condensor and evaporator. I was quite pleased with my conversion. Maybe it was because I was prepared for dissapointment. Sure it is not as good at idle, but once moving, especially on the freeway, it is just as good.
Be aware that R-134a is not as effecient a refrigerant as R-12. Therefore R-134a systems are made with a larger capacity. The system on my Wifes Suburban will freeze you out. It is R-134a. Since the system on the Saab was designed for R-12, with a smaller capacity, it will never run as cold with R-134a as R-12.
