Woohoo.

For all those who helped before, i found the problem. Today with some help, we put the car on lifts, and finally got a chance to look under the car. What a relief! Here is the good news, i don't think its the tranny. On my dads '90 900S, we had to replace the CV joints, so thats something familiar to us.

On one side, the CV rubber boot was torn, which is letting me know that it'll be going soon. The other side was good, but i'm having thoughts about it.

I looked at the inner drivers, and Waalaa! I found the problem! One of the inner drivers has just completely blown up. The axle was hanging down, and the (inner driver joint?) on the end of the axle wasn't even GOING into the inner driver. That clunking noise we heard had to have been the inner driver turning and the inner driver joint rubbing up against it. The inner driver is totally shot, and you can see where the joint must have been rubbing against it.

Curious, we took off the cover revealing the ring and pinion, and there was NO damage whatsoever! This basically made my day, and 650 for this car was a steal.

I am thinking i might as well go ahead and do a job on the whole front end. The inner driver on the other side still looks good, and the CV boot on the opposite side isn't torn, but we are thinking about getting 2 rebuilt axles and 2 inner driver joints, and just replacing it all. This will take care of the CV problems if they should occur.

Another thing i noticed was that the hose on the clutch was moving when shifted. The seller had it rigged somehow with a clamp to keep it from leaking. Its no wonder the replacement hose was uninstalled in the trunk of the hatchback. That will definately help fix the clutch problem, but i still am not sure about the pedal close to the floor. I've heard other stuff, and that shouldn't be too difficult to fix.

The seller thought the tranny was bad, looks like the joke might be on him and I have the last laugh...

If you guys have any suggestions, please respond. If you know of something else, let me know. At least the tranny isn't going, i THINK...
