No battery light on '84 900

After a couple of electrical fixes (the voltage regulator and the positive battery cable that leads up under the exhaust manifold) the battery light refuses to work at all in my non-turbo '84 900. Ironic, since what prompted these electrical fixes was the battery light not shutting off completely when the car was running. My alternator is not functioning at all now, the car will run for a while on a fully charged battery then quit. My mechanic informs me that the battery light not showing means the alternator is not working, and we have tried to get the light back on, to no avail. The bulb is not burned out, the plug is plugged in, it makes no sense.
When we were replacing the voltage regulator, it seemed like it would be easier to dissconect the hose leading from the coolant tank into the engine. My dad was the one who proposed this, and I tried to talk him out of it, but we did it anyway and ended up dumping coolant all over that portion of the engine, including the alternator and various wires. Could this have shorted things out and messed up the alternator? If so, is there any easy way to test what is messed up and replace it? Or is this just a job for my mechanic?
Thank you for your time,
Dietrich Seney
