I had to replace the main pair of hoses, as they both were leaking at the metal swaged-on ends which convert to the tubes, and bolt directly to the face of the compressor. I did the 134A conversion myself, and as I recall even including the hoses, new filter dryer, new Orings, also new liquid hose line (rusted to old filter), the whole thing was under $200. However I had friends with gages, vacuum pump, etc. which are required.
The $800 may be the going retail $ for such work. Converted mine last fall and it still is working fine. I seem to hear alot about folks losing AC on this BB, so it must be a common problem at this age. My compressor was OK and is still working (the original). I can't comment on longevity since I have only had the 90 about 1 year.
Skied Taos a few years ago, what a beautiful place; I am envious!
