Here is my understanding of how the ABS works: The system has a hydraulic pump. This pump runs to a set pressure for the system, and comes on at a lower pressure, like an air compressor. When you press the pedal you are using this pressure to apply the brakes. Each time you use the brakes you use up some pressure until the pump comes on. I think the light has a pressure switch- how this pressure relates to the pump on pressure I am not sure. With the car running and sitting still I believe you can get the pump to come on by pumping the brake and I think you will be able to hear the pump which is at the brake master above your feet in the engine compartment. It may be that this light on is OK in some situations as it is telling you to not pump the brakes since that it is what ABS does. I am sure that there is a test sequence for verifying the ABS system function. My experience with the 900 ABS was that the light would come on on start up and stay on while the pump brought pressure up some level where the light goes off.
