Rearward movement of the fork engages 1 and 3. Therefore longitudinal movement of the engine rearward will favor disengagement of those gears. By the same token, letting off the power in a trans with play in the pinion bearings has the same effect, the mainshaft moves rearward. At 190K you could well have some mainshaft endplay from pinion bearing wear as well. The side of the 1/2 fork that engages first is almost never worn much-it's the second gear face that can be service-limiting. Depends on your style though. I've never had a C900 that liked to be downshifted to first at more than a few mph, but I've seen ones that will. That's tough on the synchro and the fork, as is holding it in gear to prevent disengagement.
Check the mounts and start planning your next move.
