Everyone NEEDS a good XJ6 once in their life. Not to diminish my fellow posters, but I've had almost as many XJ6s as SAAB 900s. They're OK if you get a good one, or a bad one real cheap. By experience is one each, 82,84,85 three 86s and an 87 as well as the later models (88, 90 and 93). I would shy away from any XJ6 without the later model fuel injection. Much of what was bad about the early models was an attempt to meet emissions with carb mods. A complete failure with Jags as well as mst other makes. I'd be happy with any 82-87. Here's the biggest detractor from Jaguar ownership rust. Rust around the window is "normal", it just happens. But look your next beloved over from the bottom up. Check the sill/rocker panels and inner fender wells. Here's my latest exprience, the '87. Bueatiful car from twenty feet. I broke my Daddy's rules never buy a car at night or in the rain. I did both. This car was sooooo rusty. As it sat on my driveway it would puddle rust flakes! It also didn't feel right in the curves. These old Jags do handle well for two tons. Found out after a close look that the suspension mounting points had rusted away on the rear suspension and the whole sub-assembly was "dancing to the music" on every curve. Scarry. Even the most experienced gets bit now and again. Look for a sound example mechanicallly. Compression, engine noises (normal sounds no clunks). Also check those back brakes. It's VERY easy to change the pads (racing design) but a full weekend and heavy labor to redo the rotors. Parts are easy to come by and reasonable. DO NOT GO TO THE DEALER. Specialty Import Parts in Woonsocket RI gives good service. Plus join the local British car club. Expect the A/C to never work correctly as well. The transmission was much better in 86/87 three was a change to a GM model. I could go on but use your DIY skills and look for heavy rust. AVOID the V-12s like the plague. Oh, also. It's sacrilege to V-8 those cars. If it's a good one why ruin it and if it's a bad one why bother with the expense. Regards PFB.
