86 900T SPG
I have verified with an infra red heat monitor that the oil (GTX 10W30) in the sump rose to 318F after idling for 20 minutes. The temperature was continuing to rise off the scale on the VDO Oil Temp gauge although the coolant stayed in the mid normal zone. Once the car is driven the oil temperature will begin to go down and settle at around 180F.
I have been informed by KevinK that this (300F)is an excessive temperature and that the oil would have 'broken down' at around 250F. If this is so, what characteristics does 'broken down' oil have and what bad effects can it have if I don't change it? Am I running the risk of major engine damage but continuing to idle the engine at 300F+, while stuck in traffic ?
This high temp problem is not new and I have had to replace numerous oil seals because of leakage in the past but new ones keep arising so I am trying to find the cause. Could it be because of the excessive temperature? Does the 86 900T SPG have an oil cooler of any sort, and if so, where is it and could I place a small electric fan on it to help reduce the temperature?
All your help is greatly appreciated.
Erik
