1) Figure that out, then spend say 1/3 on the deck, 1/3 on the amp/amps, and then 1/3 on speakers and wire etc. (keep that # in your head when you go shopping) 2) Go down to your local "reputable" stereo outlet, and just play with the shit until you find something that sounds good to you. A stereo can get out of hand$$$$$ wise just like any other upgrade (engine, rims, paint, custom seats etc) so keep your budget in mind.

As for what equipment is good, opinions will vary.
Speakers (Boston Proseries, Infinity kappa's, JL's and MB quarts) are all very, very good, they all cost about the same +/- $100 or so.

Decks. (Alpine, Sony, Eclipse, JVC, Pioneer etc) look for a deck with a really good laser and pre-outs. You can get by with 2, but 3 is better (a pre-outs is a un-amplified channel output to hook up an amp)

Amps. Alpine, MTX, Sony, Fosgate, PercsionPower etc etc. Amps that are rated at 12v vs. 14.4v will deliver more power per channel. So if your speakers have say a 50watt rms. Your going to want an Amp that can provide this, other wise when you turn the volume up it will distort.

Power ratings... when a deck says 45x4 MAX that doesn’t mean it will drive a set of 50watt rms. Speakers. This is because they arrive at the # rating by testing the deck with the treble, Bass and volume all the way up and at 14.4

This only scratches the surface on car stereos, but theres a ton of information out there.

I hope this helps to shed some light on the subject,

Jordan,
85 900T
Speakers: Boston Proseries 4.5, 6.5 and 12.54 (10 drivers in all)
Amps: 3 Alpine V12's bridged to 2oms (5 channels) 2xMRVF307 and the MRVT757
Deck: CDA7949 non-power deck, solid copper chassie 3x4V pre-outs and optical interlink.
EQ: PXAH600 Digital Phase Signal Processor (allows for perfect Imaging without any Reflection/distortion/cancellation.) has 2 optical Imputs for deck and changer.

2000watts of eardrum exploding Musical clarity.
