Sqeeling(sp) noise, then lights come on, then overheats

My 1987 900 T Convertible has been making a sqeeling noixe when I start it, but it eventually would stop. Since it stopped after being driven for a little, I did not take it in to be looked out (STUPID ME). It had done something like this before, and the mechanic just tightened a belt and it stopped. Well, last night it started sqeeling and wouldn't stop. It would ease up a little if I got off the gas, but it was continuos. Trying to make it him, I carefully turned off the A/C and anything else that I thought would be helpful. The car is running the entire time with no bucking. Then the "battery" light comes on and stays on, as well as the "box" to the left of the battery light that doesn't have a picture on it. Now I am freaking out because I am afraid it is going to stop. Never stopped, but started getting the red mark (my car has never run hot before). THENNNNNNNNN, I hear some kind of strange clattering type noise under the hood for just a moment. Got the car home, but still almost to the red mark and the two lights remained on. I turned off the car and it started right up, but those two lights are still on. It was dark last night and I haven't had a chance to look under the hood (like I would know how to fix it.....). Could it be a belt that was wearing, finally broke and that was the noise I heard under the hood? Could that cause the overheating, too? I appreciate any help as I am a woman who loves her Saab, but I am just learning about it.
