Primary side of coil is excited by the ign amplifier and triggered by the hall sensor in the distributor. Bad coil wire, or more appropriately bad coil wire insulation, will give poor drivability especially when damp. Turbo cars have the coil on top of the radiator and the coil wire has to negotiate a path around the APC solenoid to the distributor. If it grounds through the insulation or has a break, the car will stop, but the tach should continue. If it stops instantly, it is probably the hall sensor, commector/wiring or the ignition amplifier. I guess it is conceivable that the high voltage could disrupt the ground signal somehow at the distributor causing a drop of tach signal, but I kind of doubt it. You may also have a dying hall sensor, connector or ign amplifier.
