I am by no means an expert on the subject but maybe I can help a bit.
I think '80-83 had the same grill and lacked the bumper ends found on '84-86 (earlier years had more of an extension of the side moldings appearance). '83-86 added parking light between headlamp and grill. '84-86 had same grill and bumper ends. Up to and including '84 windshield gasket rounded at top corners; '85--> corners are right angles. Bagdes are kind of a gold color through '84, '85 is a weird transition year for badging, '86--> badges are silver in color. Some very early 900s had hood vents on both sides of hood ('78-80?). Highlight wipers appeared '90 or 91. '92 saw the introduction of a new stock turbo rim (Aero '92?). At some point the turbo tailpipe was offset a little farther to the left. There are also some body colors that are unique to just a few years. Ruby red, eucalyptus green, a sweet shade of blue metallic and cit? beige are later model colors ('91-?) '88 or 89 is the last year for rose quartz. '86 is the last year for that slate blue/grey color. I'm sure I haven't covered every possible visual cue to model year but hopefully this helps.
