No personal experience with automatics, but have heard plenty of horror stories. Many, if not most, 5 speeds eventually develop problems. I have an '88 900S w/ 202k and original gearbox has had no problems (knock on wood). On the other hand, on my '87 900 base model the gearbox went around 130k, and I have an '85 900T w/185k, which is in the process of going. A lot of people on this board will tell you that the biggest problem with the manual gearboxes is the pinion bearing, which was apparently undersized up 'til '89, when SAAB finally corrected it. My opinion is if you have a healthy 5-speed and take care of it (regular oil-changes, whether you use 10W-30 or one of the synthetics like Redline MTL, and don't abuse it too much)it will go a good long time. After problems develop, there doesn't seem to be much you can do to prolong it's life.
