it appears that the normal mechanism for failure in the automatic saab trans is the forward band going out of adjustment and then it's actuator piston extending too far and shearing off the o-ring that is supposed to seal it. Result: No second gear.
Have your bands adjusted every year without fail and the new trans will probably last forever
