Smoke from ashtray, then some fuses blew. Now car wont start now.

I was driving in my neighborhood yesterday and smoke started coming out from the ashtray below the AC controls. I was pulling over to check under the hood, and the engine died by itself. The car would not restart, so I had to get a neighbor to push my car to my house with his pickup truck.

I checked the fuses and four or five were blown, including: fuel pump, power windows, emergency blinkers, glove compartment light, and others.

I replaced the fuel pump fuse and tried to restart it, but the fuse immediately blew again.

What I'm wondering is... what could have made all that smoke? I guess there was a short in there, but I don't really know what could have melted to the point of causing all these systems to fail.

Should I start ripping apart the dash or what? Any ideas on what behind the dash fried itself? The car still turns over, but wont start obvisouly with the fuel pump shut down.
