I was curious about doing the same thing after I discovered that the pioneer 4"x10"s in my 85 900 had dry rotted surrounds (basically disentigrated) from being out in the sun too much over the years. I picked out a set of Boston Acoustic 6"x9" RX97 three-ways.
Since the carpet on my rear deck was so shabby looking after all these years, I just took it out and recarpeted it with thicker plush and cut new holes to mount the 6"x9"s sideways on the lower part of the rear deck. Turned out very nice. Now the rear deck is more stable and doesn't squeak, and the audio system is much better.
I have a base 900 that I put a power antenna in, sony head unit, those new 6x9s and a clarion 200W amp running two 12" subs in the trunk/boot. I still haven't replaced the front speakers yet--saving up for a good set of components.
And it seems silly that I still haven't fixed the headliner or the A/C yet.
=)
