Hi Tyler,
I have an 87 900s as well. Let me be the first to say that if your looking for huge power gains, stop, drive your car until you can afford a turbo, then trade in for a turbo. Now that we have that clear let me tell you what I noticed. First make sure all your vacume lines are good replace if condition is unknown. Are you having cold idle problems? If so settle that check AMM, AIC, everything that could cause that problem. You'll probably noticed increase pick up and throttle response if you settle any of the above problems. Tune up your car, this alone might bring you to what you feel is the right level of power.
Now for the fun part. Heres what I did for more performance. I installed a catback exhuast and K&N filter I noticed more pick up after 2,750 rpms. I mostly felt a difference on highway ecceleration. After I got them installed I let my father play with my amm adjustment for more fuel and notice a little more kick. The biggest two gains I felt were when I replaced my stock rims for really light weight Kosei K-1 racing rims, and when I installed my Jacobs ignition ICE PAK. If you have the ice pac in you can run a little richer fuel ratio and not worry about igniting it the jacobs will do it. I don't have dyno times so I'll make no horsepower claims, I do intend to get a g-tech meter and dyno the car before summers end. Hope I helped, search around on the performance board you'll get some idead there as well.
Michael
