Replacement Auto Transmission- 8V v 16V
I am about to purchase a replacement auto transmission for my 1986 8V 900i. Can an auto transmission from a 16V – (say 90 -93 year model) engine be fitted. I would like to do this on the basis of it being newer. Are there ant changes to the torque convertor or ratios which would prevent this.
My transmission has failed in the area of the t/c and the trans oil pump. The journal bearing that supports the t/c and runs on the t/c stator shaft has collapsed and worn some 0.060” into the stator shaft resulting in a mechanical knocking noise in the t/c area. (see my earlier thread)
Should I attempt to repair the existing trans confining myself to the t/c and oil pump area or opt for the exchange unit.
How much contamination would there be through the transmission as a result of this failure or will it have all have ended end up in the pan.
the failure may have resulted from running low on oil as a result of a major oil leak.
Finally, the transmission has been run on Dextron in a former life. What are the long term effects of this.
Thanks
GMcB
