There is another alternative to welding that you can do at home yourself. Go to the auto parts store and buy J&B Weld. It is this epoxy stuff that you mix from two tubes and it hardens in like 10 minutes. I used it to fix a small hole in my tranny casing that was about the size of a bolt.
Now your crack might be huge, but this is a cheap and easy solution, it should work alright. The box that J&B weld comes in says that you can use it to fix cracks on engine blocks, so you should be good!
Giving it atleast a try is a good idea, what do you have to lose? $5?
