Will high power off-road lights overload the alternator?

I'm planning on installing a pair of high-intensity lights for driving out in the country at night. I'm not actually going off-roading, I just want them for safety, etc.
I'm wondering though if these would overload the alternator and burn it out in short order. In Sweden last summer I noticed that many people have these same huge lights mounted on the front of their car (not puny fog lights, I'm talking lights that are the same size as headlights) and I'm wondering if they have had to upgrade their alternator?
Thanks for any info. I was thinking about just putting a couple car batteries I have in the trunk and wiring the lights up to that, then charging them manually when they get low.
