I tried searching through the archives to try to see if I can find a description of what I've been experiencing on my car of late and I can't find an exact match. I THINK what my problem is is a faulty master cylinder, but I'm not that knowledgable.

A few weeks ago first thing in the morning when I had the car in reverse to leave my driveway, I noticed there was VERY little throw in the clutch pedal before it engaged a gear. I barely twitched my foot and the car jarred and stalled. I restarted and found that most of the stroke of the pedal had very little resistance except maybe the last inch or so toward the floor. It was very hard to keep the car from stalling as I engaged first gear. It was also difficult to get the gear shift to change gears. About a block later it was fine again. I figured that this was just an oddity as I hadn't had the problem again until today.

Coming home from work I had a hell of a time getting the car in gear in just about any gear. The clutch wouldn't engage until the pedal was pretty close to the floor and would disengage after only letting off on the pedal a little. I also noticed that when I first started the car, not only did I not have resistance on the clutch pedal until about the last inch of throw, but the brakes were very hard to push. The brake problem went away, but not the throw/resistance/gear change problems.

I'm guessing it's the MASTER cylinder as I had the funky brake thing and I know the master gets fluid from the brake system. Also, about a year ago I had many of the components related to the slave cylinder replaced (indie Saab mechanic wrote "R&R clutch assy & replace w/SAAB clutch kit, Replace clutch pilot brg". He also told me that he replaced the throwout bearing), so they're still pretty new. He told me at the time that the "synchronizer is wearing" but I have no idea what that is. Hopefully it is part of the clutch kit and was replaced!

Please someone let me know if it sounds as if I just need a new master cylinder. I sure hope so as that sounds cheaper than some of the other things in the clutch system!

Thanks in advance!
