Keep from getting jerked on A/C service

I called a couple local (Houston) Saab shops asking about getting my A/C worked on. I told them I think I just need an R-12 recharge. All of them of course say that if the R-12 is low then it must be leaking, and that they need to detect leak, fix leak, then charge, yada yada yada.
Anyone have tips for keeping from getting robbed by these guys? They all want me to come in, have them take a look at the car, etc. It's not worth it to me to spend hundreds fixing the A/C... if I can recharge it for $100 or so, that's what I want to do. Otherwise I don't want to mess with 134 retrofits or other expensive fixes at this point.
Days like this I really wish I had a trusted Saab tech to go to. I looked around in yellow pages for generic auto AC type shops, but I'm not having much luck.. I'm kinda afraid they'll screw up my Saab. Anybody have suggestions along these lines (finding a generic shop, or experience with 'em)
Thanks,
'Roo
