I like the earth more than my Saab, and I'm happy to do my part by not releasing evil R-12 into the ozone.
However, it's my suspicion that even when brand new, these systems leak to some small extent. Naturally with age this will get worse when the hoses and seals break down, but not necessarily to the point where the leak is environmentally harmful. (i.e. if I'm losing my charge of R-12 in 3 years because of a slow leak, is that really the kind of leak that MUST be fixed?) In my opinion, no, that kind of leak doesn't need to be fixed, and it's environmentally responsible not to. If I'm losing my charge in a few months, maybe that's another story. The A/C guy on the other hand wants to detect any minor leak whatsoever so he can use the legal scapegoat and tell me he HAS to retrofit my whole system to R-134 for a grand.
Thanks for the info saw.... one of these days when I finally get back to CA, I won't have to worry about A/C like I do down here in Houston.
