Under WOT in 3rd gear, car slams forward and stalls engine. bad?

1985 900 Turbo, 156k miles, no rebuilds, runs very fast, no problems till now.

Went out for a drive a few minutes ago. When I put the car in 3rd gear while at highway speed, and floor it, it gets into the 4000rpm range and maybe every other time I accelerated like this, there would be a very strong wham, the car would stop accelerating and actually slam backwards kind of. This was DEFINITELY somewhere in the drivetrain.

The third time it did this, the engine died and would not start. I had to pull over to the median and wait about 10 minutes before it would fire up. I drove it home and it ran like a champ (but I didnt give enough gas to recreate the slamming).

When it did this, it felt like the drivetrain almost seized up, giving the slamming feeling. We're talking serious deceleration but only for about .1 of a second. Like someone with superhuman power just grabbed the crank for fun and held the engine still for a second.

I'm wondering what this is, and why it stalled the engine (and would not start again for 10 minutes).

I'm thinking one of the following:

-3rd gear synchro going bad
-bad fuel filter (would that really cause the extreme slamming though?)
-bad clutch (but the car pulls like a bear)

Any ideas? Something is defintely wrong. Also, the bearing in the clutch (cant remember name) is rattling. I bought this car 2 weeks ago.
